The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. ~ Luke 16:19-25 (ESV)
Your wealth belongs to you and you are entitled to spend it and use it in any way that you would like. It is your money and you are entitled to clothe yourself in the most expensive and luxurious garments and jewelry that your money can buy. It is your wealth and you control it and you can live in extravagance and opulence if you so desire. It is your money and you can buy whatever it is that you want to eat, drink, drive in, fly in or reside in. It is your money to do with as you please. With wealth, you are debt free and you don’t owe anyone anything. RIGHT?
However, Heaven belongs to GOD and He determines who enters and who does not. Earthly wealth and riches don’t work in Heaven and they sure don’t work in hell.
GOD DOESN’T OWE ANYONE ANYTHING. However…
Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord,
and he will repay him for his deed. ~ Proverbs 19:17 (ESV)
Indifference to the sufferings of other and your refusal to see and assist others in their lack, poverty and pain are indicative of an unloving, ungodly and uncaring soul.
If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him? ~ 1 John 3:17
A soul that can live sumptuously every day and in opulence while other souls suffer in front of them is clearly not of God nor do they love GOD. And at the end of their lifespan, they have only the fearful expectation of eternal damnation.
What does this say about the rich prosperity preachers and wealthy ministers and parishioners who flaunt their wealth in the face of the poor and downcast and suffering? Can our God (YHVH) be their god of earthly greed and indifference?
The scriptures make it plain and it is obvious from the story that because of his indifference to the sufferings of poor Lazarus the rich man ended up in a place of eternal torment that we call “hell” while Lazarus experienced an eternal reward for having suffered so much on earth.
The testimony of LAZARUS could easily be…
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. ~ Psalm 34:6-7
We all would like to experience our healing, rescue and salvation in the land of the living but not all will. However, our story doesn’t end with our death. It continues into eternity. And it is there in eternity that we would like to experience the bliss and eternal blessings of eternal life with God and Christ.
Be careful and be warned. How you treat others who are less fortunate than you may have eternal consequences on your soul.
