Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’
‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”
There are a lot of preachers trained to use the scriptures to illustrate their message. However, there is a difference between using the scriptures to make a point and the Holy Spirit speaking out of the Holy Scriptures revealing God’s point.
In Matthew 4:5-7, Satan quoted Psalm 91:11-12 in an attempt to get Jesus to submit to his authority and obey him and do what he asked. But Satan quoted the scripture out of context and twisted its meaning to serve his purpose. This psalm of deliverance couldn’t possible be referring to Christ since Christ does not need delivering. He is the deliverer (Psalm 91:1-6). But Jesus responded to Satan’s deception by quoting out of the Eternal Law and Commands of Almighty God (Deuteronomy 6).
There are a lot of satanic preachers out there using the scriptures with great persuasive skill to make their point and get us to surrender to their authority and obey their self-serving demonic doctrines.
But Don’t Fall For It! Don’t get it twisted! Effective and persuasive speech and wrongful manipulation of scriptures does not draw us to Christ and salvation.
Jesus said in John 6:44 that “No one can come to him unless the Father who sent him draws them, and he will raise them up at the last day.” Therefore it is God the Father who draws us to Christ and He never deceives nor tempts us.
James 1:13 says, “For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.” And Jeremiah records the Lord as saying that “He has loved us with an everlasting love And draws us with unfailing kindness.”
The Father does the drawing and He draws us to the Living Word of God – Jesus Christ – with an everlasting love and with lovingkindness. For He has come to save His people from their sin and not to tempt them with earthly riches or to test their faith in Him through trials.
God is not a tempter but a deliverer.
May God help us to rightly discern between His Saving Word and Satan’s persuasive temptations.
