And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow. (Luke 22:41-45)
Jesus could hardly endure even the thought of the cross. He knew the physical agony would be beyond comprehension. He was already feeling the emotional devastation as He thought about the coming break in His relationship with the Father and the spiritual darkness in His heart of taking on the sin of the world. The pressures of his divine purpose and assignment began to attack His commitment to go to the cross.
Where could He go to find strength for this struggle? He went to His Father in prayerful submission. His comfort and strength came through prayer and submission to the divine will of the Father.” As long as we battle God’s will for us, agony and stress will remain. But when we can surrender and embrace God’s will for us, there is peace.
John H. Sammis wrote a hymn whose refrain says:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
Are you facing a trial in your life? Cry to God, and submit your life to His will. Trust Him and Obey Him!
Father, I pray to You today in the name of—*YeHoWsHua HaMashiach – Jesus the Christ. I praise You for Christ Jesus and for the personal sacrifice You made through Him for my redemption. Thank You Father! Please forgive me for being rebellious and stubborn regarding Your will for my life. Help me to trust and obey Your Commandments and submit to Your way. You know what is best for me. You love me beyond measure and sent Your Son to die in my place. No one loves me like You do. Hallelujah! Father I Thank You! Now as I face the difficult, frightening and the painful realities of life and as I agonize over the limitations of my humanity, I ask You to please hear my cries for mercy and help. Life appears to be more than I can bear and I don’t want to continue in this path of suffering and shame. Nevertheless, not my will but Thine be done. Help me to give up my will and ambition and seek to satisfy Your will for my life. Empower me by thy Holy Spirit to surrender to Your divine purpose for my life—not focusing on my present sufferings but looking ahead to the glorious reward and eternal victory through Christ. This is my prayer today in the name of the LORD YeHoWsHua* (Jesus) the Christ, Amen.
